At Security Council meeting, China’s envoy supports South American nation’s sovereignty. […]

Ma Zhaoxu, China’s permanent representative to the UN, reiterated China’s position at the meeting at UN headquarters in New York: ”China supports the efforts of the Venezuelan government to safeguard its sovereignty, independence and stability.”

He said that China maintains that all countries should abide by the basic principles of international law and relations.[…]

On Monday, a meeting was held by the Lima Group in Bogota, Colombia. The Lima Group, comprising 13 Latin American countries and Canada, was established in 2017 to focus on Venezuela’s situation.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido attended the meeting, at which measures were discussed to compel President Nicolas Maduro to leave office.

At the meeting, it was reiterated that Venezuela’s domestic politics should be led by Venezuelans peacefully and in the framework of the constitution and international law, backed by political and diplomatic means, without the use of force. Läs artikel

Christoph Heusgen (Germany) said that political factors led to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela and therefore the solution can only be a political one, rejecting the use of force or any measures that could put the stability of the country and the region at risk.  Calling for the restoration of the democratic process and constitutional order of Venezuela through free, transparent and credible presidential elections, he said it is high time to let the country’s people freely choose their leaders and the future path of their nation.  Warning against the politicization of the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Venezuelans in need, he said a response to humanitarian needs does not constitute an interference with the country’s internal affairs.  With 3.4 million people seeking shelter in neighboring countries, the situation affects the region.  Human rights are not an internal affair, but a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”. Brazil’s vice president, retired general Hamilton Mourão, said on Monday that under no circumstances would his country allow the United States to intervene militarily in Venezuela from Brazilian territory.

In an interview with Globo News cable channel, Mourão said Brazil will do all it can to avoid a conflict with neighboring Venezuela. He spoke from Bogotá, where he attended a meeting of the Lima Group, a bloc of nations from Argentina to Canada dedicated to peaceful resolution of the Venezuelan crisis. Läs artikel

[…] Iran had brought the action against the United States in 2016, alleging various violations of the Iran-U.S. Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights. In 2017, the United States raised preliminary objections to the admissibility of Iran’s Application and to the exercise of jurisdiction by the ICJ.

Iran argued that Iran and Iranian State-owned companies are entitled to immunity from the jurisdiction of U.S. courts and in respect of enforcement proceedings in the United States. Iran argued that the failure of the United States to recognize the separate juridical status and separate legal personality of Iranian companies violated its obligations under the Treaty of Amity and international law.

The United States asked the ICJ to dismiss all of Iran’s claims as inadmissible.

Among its findings, the ICJ held that the Treaty of Amity was still in force and that none of its provisions excluded certain matters from the jurisdiction of the ICJ. However the ICJ found that Iran’s claims based on the alleged violation of sovereign immunities guaranteed by customary international law did not relate to the interpretation or application of the Treaty of Amity. […] Samtidigt kommer kritik mot de hjälpsändningar som aldrig nådde fram till landet i helgen. Internationella Rödakorskommittén tackade nej till att medverka i hjälpinsatsen och delegationschefen i Colombia Christoph anklagar hjälpen för att vara politiserad.

– Det finns en debatt, en offentlig kontrovers, en manipulation hos alla inblandade parter av ordet humanitär, säger Christoph Harnisch, chef för den Colombianska delegationen av Internationella Rödakorskommittén till veckotidningen La Semanas podd el Diario. […]

För att Internationella Rödakorskommittén skulle stå bakom insatsen, så hade det krävts noggranna förstudier på plats i Venezuela av internationella rödakorsdelegater för att definiera specifika hjälpbehov
Dessutom skulle finnas en tydlig organisation av mottagandet av hjälpen, så att den skulle nå de mest behövande. Det här var faktorer som saknades, varför Internationella Rödakorskommittén tackade nej till att medverka.

Till många venezolaners besvikelse misslyckades lördagens insats med att få in hjälpkonvojerna till Venezuela, då gränsövergångarna blockerats av venezolansk militär och två av lastbilarna sattes i brand. Insatsen drogs tillbaka på lördagskvällen.

Hjälpinsatsen kom framförallt från USA, med det uttalade målet att lindra vad man anser vara en humanitära kris.

Venezuelas president Nicolas Maduro menar att insatsen hade en dold agenda – ett försök att avsätta honom. I ett tal i Caracas konstaterade han att det han kallar för ett försök till statskupp hade misslyckats. Läs artikel

Angiveligt handlede det hverken om demokrati eller masseødelæggelsesvåben, men om at stå last og brast med amerikanerne. […]

Endelig skulle den primære motivation for at lade Danmark følge med USA ind i Irak vitterligt skyldes hensynet til USA, er der realpolitisk ikke meget andet at gøre end at nikke anerkendende. I det sikkerhedspolitiske billede er Danmark noget nær usynlig. Vi ville end ikke være i stand til at forsvare os selv mod svenskerne, hvis de skulle finde på at angribe med halv styrke.

Nationens sikkerhed står og falder derfor med Nato-alliancen – herunder et godt forhold til alliancens militære leder USA. Sådanne forhold skabes ikke gennem gode personlige relationer alene, men ved, at vi påtager os en fair andel af byrderne. Derfor betaler vi et økonomisk bidrag til Nato-samarbejdet, og derfor bidrager vi med mandskab og materiel, når alliancen eller alliancelederen engagerer sig. Danske soldater gør det sikkert fortrinligt, når de bliver udstationeret.

Men operationelt kommer vi næppe med noget, amerikanerne eller briterne ikke ligeså godt selv kunne klare. Vores bidrag viser imidlertid, at vi betaler den pris, solidariteten koster, hvormed vi rimeligvis kan forvente, at Nato-partnerne stiller op, hvis svenskerne faktisk skulle begynde at interessere sig for Bornholm som andet end ferieø. Spain has warned that it will not back any military intervention in Venezuela after the South American country’s opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, urged other nations to consider “all options” to remove the president, Nicolás Maduro, from power. […]

However, the Spanish government spoke out pointedly against any use of foreign force.

“Not every option is on the table,” the country’s foreign minister, Josep Borrell, told the Spanish news agency Efe on Sunday. “We have clearly warned that we would not support – and would roundly condemn – any foreign military intervention, which is something we hope won’t happen.”

Borrell repeated calls for fresh elections in the South American country, adding: “The solution in Venezuela can only be reached through a democratic solution agreed by Venezuelans and the calling of presidential elections.”Läs artikel

I presidentvalet gick SFP:s kandidat Nils Torvalds till val med ett tema framom andra: Finland borde ansöka om medlemskap i Nato. I partiets valprogram inför riksdagsvalet nämns medlemskap i Nato inte alls.

– Man måste vara pragmatisk och se vad läget är. Vi har inte ändrat på vår grundinställning. Vi är ännu öppna för en process som leder till ett medlemskap, men det kräver ett starkt folkligt stöd och det stödet ser vi inte just nu.

Borde SFP omvärdera sin ståndpunkt?

– Nej, det tycker jag inte. Jag tycker att vi ska vara för Nato fortsättningsvis. Men det är viktigt att man är medveten om att det finns frågetecken kring vad den sittande presidenten i USA vill med Nato. Läs artikel

Nu tar Sverige viktiga steg för att stärka totalförsvarsförmågan. Vi går från att bygga kunskap till konkret planering och genomförande av åtgärder. Rapporten som Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap, MSB, tillsammans med Försvarsmakten lämnade till regeringen i veckan visar hur Sveriges aktörer arbetat sedan regeringen 2015 beslutade att återuppta totalförsvarsplaneringen.[…]

Myndigheterna har under 2018 krigsplacerat sin personal och börjat arbeta för att verka från alternativa och skyddade ledningsplatser samt för att kunna samverka och utbyta information på ett robust och säkert sätt. […]

I år tar vi steget från kunskap till konkreta beredskapsåtgärder. Mycket handlar om förberedelser inför nästa års totalförsvarsövning, TFÖ 2020, som är den största sedan kalla kriget. Övningen kommer att involvera ett stort antal myndigheter, kommuner, regioner, frivilliga försvarsorganisationer och en del företag. Det är först när planer blir verklighet och aktörerna engageras som totalförsvarsförmågan stärks. Läs artikel
