Det är en ny värld som visar sig när dimman lyft som länge vilat över militäralliansen Nato och den amerikanska säkerhetsgarantin för Europa. President Trump och hans administration hotar inte mer utan säger som det är.

Artigt från försvarsminister Pete Hegseth: ”Att skydda Europa måste vara ett åtagande för de europeiska Nato-medlemmarna. USA prioriterar att avskräcka Kina från krig i the Pacific.”

Strategisk förklaring från utrikesminister Marco Rubio om närmandet till Moskva: ”Om Ryssland blir för nära partner med Kina är det inte bra för oss.”

I klartext från president Donald Trump: ”Om de (Europa) inte betalar kan Ryssland göra vad f-n de vill med dem.”  Vi kan sluta spekulera om vad Trump och hans ministrar egentligen menar, vi kan se vad de gör. […]

Men för Europa utgör Ryssland i högsta grad en fiende och en farlig sådan. Att då ha en militärallians med USA, samarbetspartner med en stormakt som vill oss illa, blir omöjligt.

Vad har vi då, utan Nato? Varje land är ytterst ansvarigt för sin egen säkerhet och försvar. Men en europeisk allians och beredskap blir då nödvändig eftersom Sverige – ja, alla europeiska länder – är för små att klara försvaret ensamma.

Att välja ett mindre steg, mot en europeisk gren av Nato, faller på samma osäkerhet om amerikanskt stöd. Europa tvingas ta i beräkning att USA:s ledning hotade att koppla bort Starlink för Ukraina, deras säkraste kommunikationsväg i strid. […]

Nej, ingen önskar en EU-armé. Försvarssamarbete passar bättre utanför EU; då kan man inrymma villiga länder (Norge? Storbritannien?) och utestänga ovilliga (Ungern).

Tiden är knapp, för Trump har idéer om påtvingad vapenvila i Ukraina vilket skulle ge ett i dag skadskjutet Ryssland chans att återupprusta. Läs artikel

With around 10,000 soldiers from seven nations, the Joint Viking will be the largest military exercise in northern Norway this year.

The scenario to be trained is exactly what Donald Trump has created uncertainty about: U.S. military help in case a European NATO ally gets invaded by Russia.

“It is important that our allies practice deploying to Norway, and they must train to operate with Norwegian forces in winter conditions,” the Norwegian Armed Forces said in its description of the Joint Viking 2025 exercise. The statement adds: “This knowledge is perishable, so we must train regularly.”

The winter exercise kicks off on March 3 and will last until March 14. The main activity takes place in Troms region, in northern Norway. Navy warships from France and the Netherlands are already at port in Tromsø and thousands of soldiers are deployed to Bardufoss where the snowy part of the war games will take part.

Troops with the U.S. Marine Corps have since January conducted unit-level cold weather training in the area in preparation for the exercise. Now, they make ready for a war games scenario to protect northern parts of Norway from Russian aggression.

The Norwegian Armed Forces makes clear that NATO is ”the foundation of Norway’s defence.” […]

The American soldiers are part of the Marine Expeditionary Force, a rapid deployment unit normally based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on the U.S. east coast. Arctic warfare is something not possible to simulate at the base home. Early this month Donald Trump announced that he was about to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Then he put them on pause for 30 days. So are they on again next week? Yesterday he insisted that they are. But will they really happen? Nobody knows.

Trump is also threatening a trade war with the European Union, which he says “was formed to screw the United States.” (It was actually created with America’s blessing, because we saw it as a force for peace and democracy.) Will he follow through on his threat? Nobody knows. […]

Most alarming of all, if it’s real: People within the administration appear to be floating the idea of restructuring U.S. debt via a “Mar-a-Lago Accord” that would force investors holding Treasury bills — short-term debt — to exchange them for 100-year bonds. This would effectively be a default on U.S. debt. Since the whole world financial system rests on the perceived safety of U.S. Treasuries, which are universally accepted as collateral for many transactions, such a move would threaten global economic chaos.
