Britain looks to Germany to bolster its military in new defense pact, politico.eu

The British military of the future is going to have a strong German accent.

Defense ministers from the United Kingdom and Germany will sign a sweeping bilateral defense pact between Europe’s two biggest military spenders on Wednesday. It covers everything from joint missile development to extra exercises in the Baltics, hosting rights for submarine-hunting planes in Scotland along with a major artillery factory deal for Düsseldorf-based weapons-maker Rheinmetall.

”Security in Europe cannot be taken for granted,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement put out ahead of the summit.

The deal is all part of a master plan from the new British Labour government to forge closer ties between the U.K. and major European capitals, both through NATO and on bilateral terms. Läs artikel
